Welcome back to another episode of The Brainstorm Show. In this episode, courtesy of Reddit user mpaw975, we discuss how we approach brewing in Legacy and introduce a sweet new deck idea: Mentor Tempo.
For some background on shells in Magic, which we use to frame part of our discussion, we would like to refer you to Legacy Breakfast’s episode on the topic and recommend their podcast as a very nice Legacy resource.

great show.
love listening to you guys brew, and this deck is terrifying as a tezzerator player. chalice on one may counter your many spells, but only really cantrips. delve spells and mentors get through an then u can just throw away your one cmc spells to help boost your monk tokens. love the idea of this deck and hope to see some more sweet stuff like this.
my question to you guys would be how much do you support this deck? let’s say you have tested it to the fullest and your happy with the list, as much as can be. would u be willing to take it to a tournament/IQ/open? and what I mean is, not play your favorite deck to try this out. or is this just a Fnm type deck for you guys? I heard all the support you guys were giving it, but wasn’t sure how serious you guys are about it. I would advise maybe playing this at an IQ and doing a podcast on the results, your matchups, and changes you would make.
also, never personally noticed audio issues but I always listen with headphones in one ear.
and don’t let the length of the show ever make u cut it short. this is the best podcast I listen to and I could listen to u guys for hours talk legacy.
Thanks for your support! To answer your question, we very much believe in this deck as something that is either competitive now or something that could be competitive with very minor tweaks. Wilson and I (Paul) have been testing the deck quite a bit and feel the core strategy is very strong against a lot of the common matchups. If you will be in Charlotte this weekend, come find us for a Legacy match. We would love to test against Tezz!
yeah I’ll be in Charlotte all three days. I’ll find you guys and see if we can sneak in a game 🙂
also live in the tri-cities (Unicoi) so if it doesn’t work out, I’m sure we will play soon. if not then, ten definitely on July 19th at the legacy IQ 🙂
Some possible topics for the future:
1. GP Lille meta prediction, will Schonegger get another Top 4 but never the trophy?
2. With the release of Origin, will Dig be banned? Any other cards on the radar?
3. When will Aluren and Food Chain get the love?
regarding the dig through time in grixis delver, keep in mind that at least 50% of the time a dig through time will be finding potent bullets in (most?) matches. in other words, the sideboard. You guys did discuss replacement options, and I think it’s really important to continue along that spirit. For example, we wouldn’t call wasteland a poor choice in RUG just because there’s these other strategies using wasteland with life from the loam. You guys got a little caught up in that, but definitely discussed other perspectives which was something I really appreciated listening to this podcast. Lots of familiarity, which is super refreshing since it’s the only format i play / know about. Thanks for doing a great job!
Thanks for listening! We appreciate your feedback.
Your thoughts on GP Lille Top 16+GPT Winning deck lists would be sweet. 🙂
Hello Jonas, thanks for contacting us. We are recording tonight and posting hopefully tomorrow. Catch you on the flipside!
Thanks for the great show, guys. I’m just getting into legacy, and I’m learning a lot from your discussions. This deck looks great, and I would love to hear about any new results you have with this, as well as the Esper Death Mentor deck, in future episodes, if you have time. One quick question: was Abrupt Decay considered at all out of the sideboard as a nice way to deal with Counterbalance and other random permanents, since you are playing the Tropical Island? Or is the fact that you can’t cast it off Tundra + Tropical Island a deal breaker? Thanks again for the awesome content!
Heu guys,
I know I’m a bit late for this, but I just started listening through you’re podcasts, and I think they are fantastic.
I’ve been playing this deck with some tweaks and deel pretty good about it. I ended up cutting the spell pierces and dismember for 3 cabal therapy maindeck. Overall, I like the more proactive approach – I it helps the combo matchup pretty well, and does a good job by itself even without cheating with gitaxian probe. The deck becomes a bit more bug-like because we’re more aggressively tapping out, but for the most part, the most we ever are really holding up is one mana anyways for deathrite or removal.
I also want to cut one tundra from the deck. I usually never need two white mana, and being able to cast deathrite off only 12 sources seems a little low. I think I’d consider replacing a tundra with the fourth sea, since the chokepoint for me always seems to be black mana.
In the board, I want to incorporate golgari charm (maybe replacing one zealous persecution) and maybe abrupt decay, sonce counterbalance is still fairly problematic. I fear that may be too greedy on the mana base but overall I’m pretty happy with the deck as is.
I haven’t been able to test it against prison decks, loam decks, or blade decks, but I feel pretty reasonable vs miracles, non pyro delvers, and combo. Have you guys tested it much since this podcast?
